Supplemental Security Income (SSI): What it is - Applying

SSI is a benefit that is available to DISABLED individuals who do not have a sufficient earnings record to qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). "Disability" is defined exactly the same way as for SSDI. The application and appeal process is exactly the same as for SSDI.

There is one difference between SSDI and SSI. To receive SSDI, there are no limits on the amount of property you own or on the amount of income your spouse earns. To receive SSI, you must be disabled and have assets and household income, including your spouse's assets and income, at or below strict poverty guidelines.
